Habits and Routines of Athlete and Entrepreneur Joel Runyon

Joel Runyon is the founder of IMPOSSIBLE, a company dedicated to helping people push their limits and do impossible things. I was extremely inspired when I discovered The Impossible List, containing all the things you would think are impossible to do.

In this interview, Joel Runyon shares his life philosophy and habits that allow him to do all the impossible things.

Who Is Joel Runyon?

Joel Runyon is the founder of Impossible X and blogger at IMPOSSIBLE. He is an athlete, endurance runner, businessman, and speaker. His TEDx talk on cold showers has received over 675,000 views.

In 2017, he became the youngest person in the world to run 7 ultra marathons on 7 continents. Along the way, he raised $192,000 for Pencils of Promise and built 7 schools. He is very bad at saying "no" to a challenge.

What Are the Most Influential Habits in Your Life?

Working out.

Journaling/writing on a regular basis.

Turning off my phone for a few days at a time helps me get clarity and perspective on life.

How Do You Set Goals and Manage Time?

I set yearly + quarterly reviews with my annual review + quarterly retreats. On a day to day basis, I really enjoy using the Strike Thru method (variation fo the Bullet Journal) and combining with the Pomodoro technique while listening to either Focus@Will or Foreignrap depending on my mood.

What Do You Eat for Breakfast?

I usually don't eat breakfast. When I do, I usually eat a variation of bacon + eggs.

How Do You Train Your Body and Mind?

I like running ultra marathons for the scenery and the adventure, but my focus right now is on overall athleticism and improving strength as I lost quite a bit of weight after 777 Project.

A good workout or a long run is my favorite form of meditation. Sometimes, when I need to reset my head, I'll take a long, cold shower and that does it as well.

How Do You Meet and Connect with People?

I have a few conferences that I go to each year (The Tropical MBA events) and a few locations that I know several people will be when I travel and I try to make a point to schedule 1on1s or meetups when I'm in a city with people I know.

I make a lot of new online connections via Twitter – which despite all the noise – I think is still the best way to filter people based on their thinking.

What Are Your Sleeping Rituals?

I am terrible at sleeping. You don't want my advice here. The only thing that has helped has been incorporating taking magnesium tea about 20-40 minutes before I go to bed.

What Are Your Investing Habits?

I have automatic saving into a series of goals using Simple Bank. The majority of my investments at this point are in my own businesses and people, but I manage most of my finances at 30,000 ft view with personal capital and do index investing through Vanguard.

What Books, People, Experiences Shaped Your Thinking?

At the beginning of my journey, I found “The 4-Hour Workweek,” Chris Guillebeau, Sean Ogle, and a “Million Miles in a Thousand Years” very helpful.

These days, I've found The Tropical MBA podcasts + conferences to be incredibly helpful in dealing with many of my business problems. I also like the way that Taylor Pearson thinks through mental models. Also, Ed Latimore has a way of giving you perspective on life in 140 characters.
