4. Start Where You Are

I made my first five dollars on the internet when I was sixteen.

I was bored, I had no money, and I lived in a village in Northern Lithuania. I started researching how people made money online, found graphic design, and started following Photoshop tutorials. After a few weeks of copying better designers, I scrolled job listings and found one asking for an animated banner. I had not shipped a real banner yet. I applied anyway. I figured I would learn how to do it if I got the job. I got the job. I figured it out. I delivered. They paid me five dollars.

That five dollars was the proof. It proved I could ship something a stranger would pay for, with the tools and skills I had right then. The skill it opened paid me thirty thousand dollars over the next several years. None of that happens if I wait until I have the perfect setup, the perfect software, the right teacher, or the confidence to begin.

Most people overestimate how much clarity they can get without contact with reality. They wait for the right tool, the right course, the right mentor, the right week. The right week never arrives. What arrives is more weeks like the one you are in now, and the question is whether you start in this one or the next one.

Easy Mode begins with what you have. Your current tools. Your current skills. Your current time. Your current energy. Not the upgraded versions you will have in six months, after the upgrades you bought in the meantime have been replaced with newer upgrades, and you have moved no closer to the work itself.

There is a related observation I have only made looking back. When I was still in Lithuania, reading about designers in New York and Tokyo, I felt cursed. There was no scene, no studios, no people to meet for coffee. What I actually had was a constraint I couldn’t escape, which forced me to ship on the internet with nothing but the internet. The people I watched struggle most in the expensive cities were the ones with every option who used none of them. Constraints are not what stops you. Constraints are the gift.

Confidence is mostly evidence. You don’t collect evidence by reading. You collect it by doing the thing badly with the tools you already have. The first version teaches you what the second version should be. Skip the first one and there is nothing for the second one to be a response to.

The trap is “when I have more time.” Time doesn’t arrive. It’s traded. You will have exactly as much time next year as you have this year, minus a year.

If you have thirty minutes today, build a thirty-minute plan. Open the laptop you currently own. Use the software you currently know. Email the people whose addresses you already have. Ship the thing in the form that can be shipped in thirty minutes. It will be embarrassing. You will want to redo it before showing anyone. Send it anyway. The next version has nothing to react to until you do.
