6. Protect Mornings
Most days are lost before they begin.
Not to catastrophe. To small leaks. Notifications. Inboxes. Meetings. Other people’s priorities. A morning that started before you did.
I used to wake up at 5am. I wrote about it more than once. I waved the flag for early rising for years. I have to admit, looking back, that some of that was real and some of it was theatre. Five-am wake-up posts performed well online. Telling yourself you are the kind of person who gets up at 5am performs well in your own head. A portion of the routine was protected output. A portion of it was a costume.
I’m 34 now. I wake up around 7:30. I have a wife I want to have dinner with, friends who stay out late, and a life in Spain where the evening only really starts at 9pm. I’m also doing the best work of my life.
What changed is not the rule. What changed is which version of the rule I was actually following. The rule is not wake at 5am. The rule is protect the first hour after you wake up, whenever that is. The early morning matters because of the quiet, not the hour. The world has not yet started making requests of you. Whether the window opens at 5am or 7:30 or later, it’s the only stretch of the day when you are producing instead of reacting.
This is the protection move. Easy Mode gives your best energy to your best work. The most reliable way to do that is to make the first window of your day, whatever time it starts, untouchable.
You need one rule: no inputs before outputs. Create something, anything, before you consume anything. A page. A paragraph. A workout. A walk. A single email you owed yourself.
The phone is the test. The first thing you touch in the morning sets the tone for your brain for the next several hours. If the first input is your inbox, you are running someone else’s calendar. If the first input is the news, you are renting your attention to strangers. If the first input is X or Instagram, you are warming up your nervous system on adrenaline before breakfast.
I keep the phone out of the bedroom. I write before I read anything from anyone. I read for twenty minutes before I open any feed. The rule is not about willpower. It’s about the order. If I touch the feed first, I lose the morning. If I touch the page first, I keep it.
There is a quieter benefit you won’t notice for a few months. The morning becomes the part of the day you don’t have to negotiate with yourself about. Whatever else goes well or badly, you already shipped one thing. That’s a small floor the rest of the day rests on.
A practical version, if you are starting from chaos:
- Wake up at the same time as yesterday.
- Drink water and step into light.
- Do one twenty-minute output block before opening anything.
That’s enough. You don’t need the rest. The hour you wake up is not the point. The first hour after you wake up is.
