7. One Thing

When most people hear one thing, they think one calling. That’s the wrong question, and chasing it has cost me years.

I’m a generalist. I have written, designed, built software, podcasted, traveled, taught, and run small businesses, and I will keep adding to that list because it’s how my brain works. For most of my twenties I treated this as a defect. I assumed real adults had a single title and that mine was missing because I had not focused hard enough. The chase for the One Real Thing burned more energy than any of the actual work ever did.

The Rule of One in this book is not about that.

The Rule of One is about attention, not identity. It’s about what your day contains, not what your life is. The version of you who tries to push five projects forward on a Tuesday makes worse decisions on all five than the version who picks one and finishes it. This is not a moral claim. It’s what your attention can actually carry.

Easy Mode runs on a small set of “ones.”

One outcome per day. Not five, not three. One thing that, if you only got it done, the day would still count.

One deep block. A protected ninety minutes for the kind of work that doesn’t survive interruption.

One ship per week. A page, a post, a feature, an email, a call. Something that leaves your computer and meets reality.

One channel per season. If you are trying to build an audience, pick one place and show up there for three months before you decide it’s not working.

These don’t require you to figure out your calling. They only require you to choose, today, what gets the next ninety minutes.

The trap is treating busy as progress. Busy is often avoidance with better branding. You feel productive because you are moving. You are not moving forward, you are moving sideways, and at the end of the week you can’t point to the thing you actually shipped. A morning with one outcome accomplished beats a morning with seven outcomes attempted.

The same rule applies to anything you are trying to sell. One customer type. One promise. One call to action. One way to pay. Early projects mostly die from “just one more feature.” The product becomes a junk drawer trying to serve everyone and serving nobody.

I used to start every day with a long list of optimistic tasks and end every day apologizing to myself for not finishing it. I now write one task at the top of the page, the one that matters most that day, and run at it until it’s done. The rest of the list still exists. It just doesn’t get to interrupt that first run.

If you only have time for one decision today, make it this one: write down the single thing that would make this week count. Put it on the calendar for tomorrow morning and refuse to do anything else first.
