20. Borrow Distribution

Build where people already are.

If I had to compress everything I believe about getting work seen into one line, it’s this: distribution beats creation. The best product with no distribution loses to a worse product with a good channel, every time. Builders hate hearing this, because building is the fun part and distribution feels like begging. It isn’t begging. It’s showing up where your people already gather, instead of building an empty venue and praying they find it.

Hard Mode builds in silence and hopes for a miracle launch. Easy Mode borrows distribution that already exists: communities, audiences, marketplaces, platforms, partners, anywhere a crowd with your problem is already standing around.

You borrow it by being useful in those places. Answer questions where your audience already hangs out. Collaborate with someone who already has their trust. Ship small free tools that earn links. Attach your work to demand that already exists instead of trying to manufacture new demand from zero. You don’t need to go viral. You need to be visible in one place, consistently, to the same few hundred people, until they know exactly what you make.

The best distribution feels boring: same place, same people, same problem, repeated. That boredom is the sound of compounding. Most people quit a channel right before it works, because week six feels identical to week two and they can’t see the trust accumulating under the surface.

Borrowing comes with one rule attached: pair it with ownership. Borrowed attention is rented, and rent goes up or the landlord changes the rules. So send the people you reach to something you own, a page, an email list, and capture the relationship before you need it. Distribution finds customers. Ownership keeps them.

One outreach message that works, because it asks for almost nothing:

Hey [Name], I noticed you help [audience] with [problem]. I built a tiny [tool or template] that does [outcome] in [time]. If it’s useful I’ll send it over, and feel free to share it with your people.

That’s it. Short. About their audience, not about you. Asking for attention, not a favor.
