Mine The Thread First
Answer the Reddit conversation that already exists. Do not start a new one to promote yourself.
The spam version of Reddit marketing is a launch post in a subreddit that did not ask. The working version is the opposite. Someone already wrote "does anyone know a tool for X." You find that thread, you leave a useful answer, and you mention your product only if it is the honest answer. The tools that used to industrialize the search are dying. The search itself still works.
What to do: Make a short list of phrases your buyer types when they are stuck. Watch Reddit, and Hacker News if it fits, for those phrases. Reply in threads that are already moving, as a person who did the thing, not as a brand. Keep a weekly hour for this. Do not automate the reply.
Why it works: Demand showed up before you did. You are joining a purchase conversation, not starting a marketing one.
Example: Fed built GummySearch as an internal script to find Reddit threads where people were asking for communities, then he pointed them at The Hive Index. That guerrilla loop was effective enough that he productized the script. GummySearch later reached more than 140,000 founders, marketers, and investors. On November 30, 2025, he closed the business to new customers because Reddit's API terms forbade the commercial use. The tool is winding down through 2026. The original motion, find the thread, help, mention the product, is still legal. F5Bot, live since 2017, still emails you when your keywords appear on Reddit, Hacker News, and Lobsters, for free.
Walk it through
I checked the product this play used to recommend. It is gone. That is the 2026 version of this chapter.
1. See the shutdown on the homepage.

The page still says "Your customers are on Reddit." The banner says you cannot start there as a new customer. Do not build a process on a tool that is in its last year.
2. Read why it died, and keep the number.

Fed is explicit. Reddit's Data API usage policies blocked a commercial research product. LTD holders keep access until 11/30/2026. New signups are closed. The 140,000 figure is his, on his domain, on the goodbye post. Use it as proof the job was real, not as a reason to hunt for a clone that will hit the same wall.
3. Use the alert tool that is still a website, not an API business.

F5Bot does one job. You give it keywords. It emails you when they appear. That is enough. Pair it with Reddit's own search and, if you have it, Reddit Pro's Trends tab. Howitzer and the auto-reply class of tools are a different, riskier job. They post for you. That is how accounts get banned.
This is not Seed the Reddit Thread. That chapter is about earning citations in AI answers. This chapter is about finding a buyer who already asked.
The read
- The thread is the lead. If nobody asked, you do not post.
- The tool is disposable. GummySearch had 140,000 users and still lost to an API policy. Own the keyword list, not the subscription.
- A useful reply is the only format that survives. Anything that reads like a launch announcement will get removed, and should.
Steal it
Have the assistant propose ten phrases from how buyers already describe the job, your category, a competitor plus "alternative," the stuck sentence. Put them in F5Bot. When an alert hits, have it draft a reply. You open the thread. You post it, or you leave it if the draft is not true. The assistant does not get the Reddit login. Mention the product only when a named alternative is already in the thread.
If you want the original Hive Index version, search for people asking "is there a community for X" and send them somewhere good, even when it is not yours. That is how Fed got permission to pitch.
Gotchas
- Do not buy a "Reddit agent" that comments at volume. That is how this channel burns down for everyone, including you.
- Howitzer, Promotee, and similar promo tools were in the source notes. Treat them as optional research tabs, not as autopilot. If the site wants to post as you, walk away.
- A keyword alert on your own brand is customer support, not growth. Run that too. Do not confuse it with this play.
