Seed The Launch Surfaces

Product Hunt is a day. The supporters are a month. Everything else is optional.

A launch on Product Hunt, Hacker News, or Medium as a stranger is a coin flip. A launch after three weeks of a teaser page, a notify list, and personal asks is an operation. A junk-drawer version of this play lists PH, HN, Medium, Polywork, Upwork, Fiverr, Etsy, eBay, and Amazon. Most of those are not launch surfaces for a SaaS product. The ones that still matter share one mechanic: you arrive with people who already said they would show up.

What to do: Three weeks out, ship a Product Hunt teaser and collect "notify me" followers. Tell your own list first, the One Audience, Every New Launch rule. On the day, reply to every comment as a founder. Take HN or Medium only if the product is actually for that room. Ignore marketplaces that do not have your buyer.

Why it works: Product Hunt's ranking is front-loaded. The first four hours decide whether strangers ever see you. Those hours are won by people who already opted in, not by a hunter you hired yesterday.

Example: Tom Dekan launched Stackfix on Product Hunt in December 2024 and published the recap on February 15, 2025. The badges on that page, still live, say #1 Product of the Day, #1 Product of the Week, #1 AI Product of the Week, #1 SaaS Product of the Month, 1,119 upvotes. His own article says they were targeting about 1,000 upvotes on the day to feel safe for Product of the Day, and that the teaser-page follower list is how you are in the top five when votes go public after four hours.

Walk it through

I opened Tom's recap so the badges and the process come from the same URL.

1. Look at the result he is willing to embed.

Tom Dekan's "How we won Product of the Week on Product Hunt," Stackfix card with 1,119 upvotes and Product of the Week badges

The sidebar of that article is the process: speak to someone who has launched, set the teaser three weeks out, write the hunter post, prepare the team, do not post in a public community as a stranger. That last line is the whole difference between this chapter and spam.

2. Build the first four hours before the day starts.

Everyone who hits "notify me" on the teaser gets an email when you go live. That email is your opening. Personal DMs fill the gaps. If you are not in the top five when the ranking unhides, Tom's read is that casual visitors never scroll to you.

Clueso's recap, July 14, 2025: more than 120 upvotes an hour at the open, then 1,300 upvotes and #1 for the day and the week

Clueso launched on July 8, 2025 and wrote it up six days later. The rate is on their blog: more than 120 upvotes an hour in the first hours, from people they already knew, then 1,300 upvotes, 250 comments, and #1 for the day and the week. Two companies, the same mechanic. The list exists before the day starts. The founders stay in the comments after it does.

3. Treat HN and Medium as separate rooms, not as row 2 of a checklist.

Hacker News wants a sentence a regular would click, and a founder in the thread. Medium wants a story, not a product page import. Polywork is gone as a serious surface. Upwork, Fiverr, Etsy, eBay, and Amazon are marketplaces. Use them if you sell what they sell. Do not paste a SaaS launch across all of them to feel thorough.

Amazon as a recommendation engine for a compiled ebook is Syndicate The Short Book, not this chapter.

The read

  • The teaser list is the launch. The day is the reveal.
  • Founders in the comments are the product. Hired upvote campaigns get reversed. Stackfix watched a competitor drop 400 votes when Product Hunt caught them.
  • Most of the old checklist is noise. PH plus your own audience is the motion. Everything else is a maybe.

Steal it

If you are more than three weeks from launch, have the assistant draft the teaser and the note to your list. You send the note. If you are closer than that, skip PH and launch to the owned audience first. On the day, one person owns the comments. The assistant keeps who was asked and drafts the recap. Nobody owns posting in random Discords.

After the day, write the recap. Tom's article is itself distribution. So is Clueso's. The launch becomes a shoulder post for the next one.

Gotchas

  • 1,119 upvotes is December 2024. Tom says the number you need moves. Check hunted.space, or whatever replaced it, before you treat 1,000 as a law.
  • A hunter who does not use the product is a billboard, not a partner. Get someone who will write a real first comment.
  • Do not buy votes. The ACE Studio drop in Tom's recap is the caution. You lose the week and you train the site to distrust you.
